Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Paediatric Diabetic Specialist Nurse (PDSN) to manage a caseload of children aged 0-18 years with Type 1, Type 2, and other forms of diabetes. This role involves providing specialised, advanced nursing care and education to children and their families, ensuring effective management of paediatric diabetes through innovative treatments and supportive care.
Key Responsibilities
- Patient Care: Manage a defined caseload of children with diabetes, providing specialised nursing care and expertise.
- Education & Training: Provide education and training for newly diagnosed patients and their families, as well as school staff, after-school clubs, and other institutions.
- Diabetes Technology: Stay up-to-date with diabetes technology, including closed-loop pumps and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems. Review and adjust treatments based on these technologies.
- Insulin Management: Perform carbohydrate counting, dose adjustments, and insulin management.
- Nurse-Led Clinics: Conduct clinics through face-to-face consultations, phone calls, and Teams meetings.
- Safeguarding: Participate in safeguarding discussions and liaise with other professionals to ensure patient safety.
- Autonomous Decision-Making: Make independent clinical decisions and contribute to a multi-professional approach in patient management.
- Communication: Establish and maintain safe and effective communication with patients, carers, and other healthcare professionals.
- Team Collaboration: Work under the team leader and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including a consultant, dietitian, clinical psychologist, and other PDSNs.
Requirements
- Qualifications: Registered Nurse with a valid NMC registration, Degree in Nursing or equivalent, Specialist training in paediatric diabetes care.
- Experience:
- Significant experience in paediatric nursing.
- Experience in diabetes management and education.
- Proven ability to work autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Skills:
- Strong clinical skills in paediatric diabetes management.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to educate and support patients and their families.
- Proficiency in IT for maintaining clinical records.
