Position Overview: We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Neonatal Nurse to join our dynamic team. As a Senior Neonatal Nurse, you will play a pivotal role in the provision of specialised care for newborns and infants in our neonatal unit. Your expertise and leadership will contribute significantly to the delivery of high-quality, compassionate care to our smallest patients and their families.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide expert nursing care to neonatal patients, including assessment, monitoring, and intervention as required.
- Coordinate and supervise the nursing team, ensuring adherence to best practices and maintaining high standards of care.
- Act as a mentor and resource for all staff working within the area, including students and other learners, promoting a conducive environment for quality learning and assessment.
- Maintain own continuing professional development needs in education, research, clinic, and leadership skills.
- Develop and maintain competence in additional skills related to the needs of children, particularly those with differing needs.
- Undertake air transfer training and participate in off-island transfers as required following a period of training and consolidation.
Clinical Responsibilities:
- Be professionally accountable within the NMC Code of Conduct, recognising own limitations of work and practice.
- Assess and plan, implement, and evaluate care in negotiation with the family, adapting to the individual needs of the infant.
- Attend labour ward and competently assist in the resuscitation and stabilisation of a newborn.
- Act as an advocate for the child and their family, ensuring the provision of appropriate information and support services.
- Guide, advise, and direct other staff in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care.
- Lead a team of staff in emergency and other acute situations, ensuring patient needs are met and significant others are supported.
- Utilise information and data to identify patient problems and guide decision-making processes.
- Promote service user involvement in the planning, delivery, and evaluation of care, respecting their wishes, beliefs, and dignity.
- Contribute to the continuing development of the Special Care Unit.
- Participate in the internal rotation of day and night shifts within the unit.
Leadership/Managerial Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the recruitment and retention of team members.
- Coordinate a team of staff, ensuring clear systems of communication and addressing any work-related issues raised by the team.
- Ensure implementation of the organisation’s objectives, policies, and procedures.
- Assist in the development and review of policies, guidelines, protocols, and procedures.
- Undertake professional development reviews with identified team members.
- Support staff with performance issues, developing action plans to address developmental needs.
- Act as a professional role model, promoting high standards of practice and strong professional values.
- Assist with shift planning, including the efficient use of Bank and Agency staff.
- Promote safety, risk management, and participate in clinical audit and incident reporting.
- Attend and participate in Special Care Unit and other relevant meetings.
Communication:
- Communicate effectively with patients/clients and their significant others, considering cultural background and cognitive functioning.
- Communicate clearly with all members of the multidisciplinary team, demonstrating sensitivity to cultural and language differences.
- Manage conflict between individuals, including staff, patients/clients, and their significant others.
- Ensure written communication complies with organisational and professional standards.
Audit/Information Technology/Research Activity:
- Initiate and undertake clinical audits to monitor and maintain standards of practice.
- Utilise the critical incident reporting system to document risks impacting patient care.
- Promote evidence-based practice and access organisational electronic information systems relevant to the role.
