We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Radiographer to join our team at renowned hospital in Channel Islands.
As a Senior Radiographer, you will play a crucial role in performing and overseeing a variety of diagnostic imaging procedures. You will ensure the highest standards of patient care and imaging expertise while supporting and guiding junior radiographers. This role is ideal for a professional with substantial experience in radiography who is looking to advance their career in a supportive and state-of-the-art clinical setting.
Role of the Department:
- Approximately 55,000 examinations are performed per annum within Radiology. The staff consist of 5 consultant radiologists, 20 radiographers, 6 admin/secretarial staff, 5 radiographic support staff and 3 nursing staff.
- The department carries out a wide range of general and specialised imaging procedures and provides training and development opportunities for all types and grades of staff.
- The department employs a full digital PACS system.
Relationships:
- The post holder will report to, and be responsible to, the Radiology Service Manager and accountable to the Superintendent Radiographer General.
Job Summary:
- Rotate through the general X-ray department to include the following areas: General Radiography rooms 1 and 2, Fluoroscopy room 3, Mobile plain film radiography, Mobile Fluoroscopy.
- Rotate through X-ray/CT/MRI, (and or) NM (and or) BSU.
- Provide a personal and patient-focused Radiology service.
Key Tasks:
Clinical Responsibilities / Role
- Individually assess and justify a range of diagnostic examinations under the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposures) Regulations (IR(ME)R) 2000 using appropriate Practitioner Guidelines.
- Perform a range of diagnostic imaging examinations and provide care for patients during these examinations, respecting the rights of privacy and confidentiality, and evaluate the clinical quality of the images produced.
- Produce high-quality images, including any digital image post-processing required, on all examinations.
- Update records on CRIS and Centricity and ensure PACS/CRIS processes are implemented in line with IR(ME)R, professional, and local guidelines.
- Offer clinical advice on images through A&E and GP fast tracks using the red dot indication system.
- Maintain high standards of radiation protection, being aware of the local rules and systems of work in each relevant area.
- Ensure that all appropriate documentation of patient attendance is complete and accurate, including patient identity, pregnancy status, and radiation doses.
- Continue to develop through CPD and by role expansion as appropriate and undertake all mandatory training as required. Record all training and development in a portfolio of continuing professional development.
- Be involved in clinical audits, quality assurance, and quality control programmes as required.
- Assist in the instruction and supervision of newly qualified radiographers, student radiographers, assistant practitioners, and other staff where appropriate.
- Report any untoward incidents involving patients, staff, or equipment to the Modality Lead Radiographer or directly to the Section Lead as soon as possible and in accordance with hospital policy.
- Adhere to all hospital and Directorate Policies and procedures and Health and Safety and Risk Management, with particular reference to IR(ME)R 2000, ensuring full compliance in own work, other staff members, and within the work area assigned to.
- Maintain patient safety through rigorous and consistent compliance with hospital policies for the prevention and control of infection, including hand hygiene and maintaining a clean and tidy work environment. Undertake appropriate mandatory training and updates in infection prevention and control.
- Be involved in the provision of the out-of-hours service within the Clinical Radiology Department.
- Handle frequent short periods of moderate physical effort when positioning and manoeuvring patients, equipment, and accessories.
- Occasionally/frequently be exposed to distressing and emotional circumstances such as those relating to patients receiving bad news or involved with trauma.
- Concentrate for frequent periods, particularly whilst carrying out clinical examinations.
- Occasionally/frequently be exposed to unpleasant working conditions (e.g., dealing with bodily fluids).
- Prioritise work and re-allocate tasks, situations, or staff to meet organisational requirements.
- Exercise discretion to work within a set of defined parameters and be guided by principles and broad occupational policies.
- Undertake other duties as and when required by the demands of the service or the Modality Superintendent, subject to negotiation with the post holder.
Operational / Managerial Responsibilities
- Work as a multi-disciplinary team member to ensure efficient and effective patient management.
- Prioritise own workload to efficiently manage service provision.
- Maintain effective communication and dissemination of information verbally and electronically.
- Actively involve in service development, improvement, and promotion.
- Report clinical, non-clinical, and radiation incidents in line with hospital and departmental Risk Management policies.
- Report without delay any equipment malfunction or image quality deterioration or failure to the superintendent radiographer.
- Perform basic fault finding of equipment problems and liaise with service engineers to coordinate repairs as required.
Training, Research and Development
- Participate in the academic programme of the department as required.
- Participate in annual appraisal reviews with a nominated appraiser.
- Take responsibility for implementing a personal Professional Development plan.
- Maintain knowledge of technological and technical advances in methods of diagnostic imaging to promote a culture of continuous improvement within the department.
- Consult on, and draft procedures/protocols and also propose changes to own work area.
- Perform regular self-assessment of images and reject analysis, ensuring all results are documented, recognising trends and working continuously to further develop imaging skills.
- Maintain continued competency in emergency resuscitation, manual handling techniques, fire regulations, and other mandatory courses particular to the work environment and attend the appropriate training as required by the hospital.
Key Criteria:
Essential
- DCR or BSc in Diagnostic Radiography.
- HCPC Registration.
- Minimum 2 years relevant clinical and post-graduate radiography experience in a specialist area to include CT/MRI, (and/or) NM (and/or) Mammography.
- Possess a wide range of general and cross-sectional radiographic skills.
- Demonstrable evidence of continued Audit and CPD.
- Knowledge of: Quality Control, Quality Assurance, Clinical Audit, Radiation Protection (including IR(ME)R 2000), Radiology based IT systems i.e., PACS and RIS.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Good learning skills.
- Practical training in a wide range of general radiographic skills.
- Practical training in X-ray/CT/MRI (and/or) Nuclear Medicine (and/or) Breast Imaging.
- High standard of patient care.
- Ability to motivate and support others in clinical practice and training.
- Ability to prioritise.
- Ability to work calmly under pressure.
- Ability to use own initiative.
Desirable
- SOR Membership.
- Certificate of Competence in IV injecting within a radiology environment.
- Evidence of working towards postgraduate study within a specialist clinical area.
- Valid Driving Licence (for on-call duties).
